As charter school governance is an important part of thriving, high-quality schools, we are excited to work with boards to provide these important trainings and certifications.
Board Smart will assist all charter schools in Tennessee with meeting training and certification requirements, pursuant to Tennessee Code Annotated 49-13-111(q).
This regulation requires that all new board members participate in six hours of training annually. And, it requires that current board members participate in four hours of training annually.
Board Smart by the Tennessee Charter School Center provides both the necessary training and certification. What’s more, thanks to partnerships like the one between BoardOnTrack and TCSC, these trainings offered through Board Smart are offered at 1/3 the price of independent trainings.

BoardOnTrack will offer six on-demand training sessions this year.
BoardOnTrack’s TCSC-certified training workshops are available to all Tennessee charter school board members, regardless of your BoardOnTrack membership status.
BoardonTrack will off six on-demand training sessions. You can complete all six. Or, for experienced board members, choose the four that are most useful to you.

- Structuring your Board for Success
- Make your Meetings Matter
- Governing for Growth
The first two are live now and can be accessed at boardontrack.com/tcsc. The remaining courses are coming soon.
This year, the on-demand sessions will be augmented by live, remote workshops.
BoardonTrack will provide two follow-up virtual TN Governance Roundtable sessions with participants who have completed the on-demand training sessions.
Each live session will allow participants to connect with BoardOnTrack’s nationally-recognized governance expert, network with peers from around the state, and align next steps to put what they learned into action.
Upon registration with TCSC and receipt of payment, you will receive information to access your selected trainings and receive certification.
How to receive your certification
Each charter board is required to complete certification through the Tennessee Charter School Center, through the Board Smart program.
Charter Boards accessing Board Smart will need to have each board member complete a post-training evaluation of the trainings as proof of completion for certification.
The post-training evaluation link will be sent to you with your payment confirmation email and should be submitted upon completion of your chosen webinars.
